The most important section of the first edition of the festival was the international dramatic competition for the Krakow Film Award (100,000 euro). 12 independent productions from young directors coming from 8 different countries competed for the prize. A lot of outstanding independent film artists came to Krakow, including the directors who were the Jury members: Hector Babenco, Petr Zelenka, Michael Almereyda as well as the composer – Zbigniew Preisner. The American director – Azazel Jacobs and his film “Momma’s Man” turned out to be the winner and the Audience Award went to Alex Holdridge - the director of “In Search of a Midnight Kiss”.
More than 100 films were screened during this edition of the festival, apart from the movies that took part in the dramatic competition, some latest independent productions from all over the world selected by international experts of the world’s biggest film festivals like: Trevor Groth (Programming Director at Sundance Film Festival), Mike Plante (Sundance, CineVegas) and Rosa Martinez Rivero (BAFICI film festival in Buenos Aires). The opening film of the festival was Cannes Golden Palm winner – “The Class” from Laurent Cantet. The “Discoveries” program presented the most promising independent movie-makers from the United States, including the well-known director Harmony Korine’s “Mister Lonely” and Bruce McDonald’s “Tracey Fragments” with the “Juno” star – Ellen Page.
In addition, the festival organized a retrospectives section of Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey. The most important films directed by “the Pope of the Underground”, whose copies were borrowed from the special collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) were shown in Krakow. The guests of the retrospective were Paul Morrisey himself (Warhol’s long-term manager and a film director) and Warhol’s superstars – Holly Woodlawn and Mary Woronov. The historical meeting of Warhol’s three closest friends and collaborators from the Silver Factory’s times took place in Krakow at OFF CAMERA independent film festival.
The first edition of OFF CAMERA also featured a number of events aimed at presenting the art of independent film. from as many perspectives as possible. There were numerous meetings with directors, actors, producers and the authors of the films shown at the festival and special lectures given by “masters”, including Peter Zelenka, Michael Almereyda and a seminar taught by Richard Morrison – one of the most important directors of the film opening credits in the world (Tim Burton's “Batman” and “Sweeney Todd”, Bertolucci’s “Dreamers”). Moreover, except for the film events, the festival offered its audience an underground music program and the concerts at the festival club, which was hosted in the historical building of the Krakow Main Train Station. The design of the first key visual of the festival was created by Maria Ganszyniec based on the idea of Gregora Timlina.
